Paraguay has maintained the same flag since November 27, 1842 and currently stands as a symbol of the republic. The flag has three equally proportionate horizontal bands of red, white, and blue. The red in the flag stands for patriotism, courage, equality, and justice for all. The white band symbolizes steadfastness, unity, peace, and purity of ideas. While the blue represents love, sharpness, a sense of reality, and liberty. Red is the top band, white with the emblem is the center band, and blue is the bottom band. Paraguay has an interesting flag because it is the only national flag in the entire world to have different obverse and reverse faces. The obverse side bears the national coat of arms and the reverse bears the seal of the treasury. The obverse side has a star that represents the date of independence while the lion guarding the Phrygian cap represents the defense of liberty (Country Reports). Main Page
